I knew someone whose daughter was like this. Fine at school, fine with others but around her mother (my ex friend) she was an unholy terror. Her mum refused to admit she might have something to do with it or get the kid help. One of many reasons we are no longer friends.

I'd believe there was something going on with her for sure. My mom used to get very angry very quickly after her stroke. One day she was irritated by someone's cart blocking the grocery aisle and proceeded to simply ram it out of the way while muttering racial obscenities (I KNOW that was the stroke's doing--my mom didn't have a racist bone in her body). I apologized to the lovely couple and after that grocery shopping became my sole responsibility.

Not sure which kind of insurance you mean but private health insurance isn't required for chemo or other mandatory medical treatment in Canada - it's covered by the government (yay for universal health care!) For the life insurance the way I read it evil stepdad planned to wait til mum died and take it all, mum was still able to make informed decisions, she changed the beneficiary to be her daughter, daughter got it all. Does that help?
